Who to ask for permission?

The authorization for exceptional convoys to circulate is issued by the prefect of the department of the place of departure or of entry into France for exceptional transports coming from abroad.

To obtain this authorization, you must submit a request to the instructing service of the DDE of the relevant department, which processes the request on behalf of the prefect.

Exceptional transport of 1st category

You must possess in your vehicle the national map of exceptional transport routes of the first category. You will also need to carry a circulation prescriptions booklet for highways and the booklet of specific circulation conditions for crossing certain urban areas or particular points.

 

It is issued for a maximum duration of 5 years. General circulation restrictions

The prohibition applies to all vehicles or road units that have an exceptional nature due to their dimensions and/or weight and do not comply with the regulatory limits.

The movement of exceptional convoys is prohibited on all roads and highways from Saturday or the day before a holiday at 12:00 PM to Monday or the day after the holiday at 6:00 AM. This rule can only be overridden in cases of authorized derogation if there is an absolute necessity, taking into account local circumstances requiring the department prefect to give a favorable opinion.

These restrictions also apply during ice-breaking barrier closures, on certain routes, in snow or icy conditions, or when visibility is poor.

 

Regulatory derogations for highway circulation

The derogation is granted by the prefect to whom the application was submitted.

Exceptional convoys of 1st category may be authorized to circulate on the highways listed on the national route map if their permanent individual authorization specifies so.
